The Uses of Minerals

  • the people that live today still use minerals.
    • we are always surrounded by materials that have come from minerals.
      • such as metal body of a car and the glass of the car.
  • minerals are the source of many things such as metals, gemstones, and may other materials used to make products.
    • minerals are very important in our everyday life.

Gemstones

  • gemstones are usually always beautiful.
    • they have been used for people through out the ages.
  • once a gemstone has been cut and polished it is then called a gem.
    • gems mainly used for decoration and jewelry and many other stuff.
  • can also be used for grinding and polishing (polishing other gemstones) and even for mechanical parts.

Metals

  • some minerals are the source for metals like aluminum, iron, copper, or silver.
    • metals are very useful for they can be stretched into wire, flattened into sheets, or even hammered or molded and it won't be able to break.
  • metals are in many things like metal filaments in light bulbs.
  • this all began as minerals that were inside Earth's crust.

Other Useful Minerals

  • there are also many other useful minerals than metals and gems.
    • people may use these materials from these minerals in foods, medicines, fertilizers, and even building materials
  • the very soft mineral talc is ground up to make talcum powder
  • Fluorite is very important in making aluminum and steel
  • the clear type of crystals are used in optical instruments such as microscope
  • Quartz us a type of mineral found in sand, its used in making glass and even electronic equipment and also watches

Ores

  • a ore that has useful minerals in it.
  • most metals don't form in pure form
    • . before metals, gemstones, and other type of minerals can be aloud to separate from their ores, geologists must find them
      • prospectors are the people who search or prospects an ore deposit
